"Just like hair cuts and leather shorts, musical genres pass in and out of fashion almost in the blink of an eye. But in the periphery, lurking almost out of view, shoegaze and drone are always there, beavering away regardless of whether it’s nu-rave, witch house or MOR that’s taking the front pages of the music press. And whilst he’s unlikely to make any money from it, this sense of perpetual relevance is one of the things that must make getting to sleep that much easier for Australia’s Colours.
Made up of one man, this is the work of someone who has spent far too much time cooped up in a bedroom listening to My Bloody Valentine records, and latest single ‘I’ve watched you suffer’ sounds like the work of a man unable to convince his friends to flesh out his moody demos. There are big dream beneath it all, attempts to capture the ambiance and atmosphere of a live band but not necessarily having ability or amount of arms to achieve it. Maybe that’s what makes it so lovable, though – reaching for the stars in spite of all the limitations, making for six and a half minutes of very enjoyable noise."
